Hybrid and All-Electric Vehicle Drive Trains

Hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) traction drives require highly torque-dense and highly efficient electric machines which operate over a wide speed range. Magnomatics’ PDD® technology is ideally suited for integration in HEV traction drives, and will result in a vehicle drive-train which is more compact and reliable than can be achieved by competing technologies. Our Our PDD® technology is suitable for series hybrid and/or parallel hybrid topologies, in both axle drive and in-hub forms and can be used in applications such as commercial vehicles, military vehicles, off-road construction vehicles and earth moving equipment. Magnomatics ultra high torque PDD® operates with a conventional off-the-shelf AC electric drive, and greatly simplifies the cooling and lubrication systems because of its high efficiency and contactless operation. Extensive torque-speed profiles and field-weakening operation can be accommodated by appropriate design of the electric machine.

Auxiliary Drives

A wide range of auxiliary drives are used in vehicles, with applications ranging from coolant pumps, compressors and power-steering pumps and actuation. Magnomatics magnetic gear technology offers a highly increased efficiency over belt-driven or hydraulic systems, and will result in a more compact system than those which use conventional electric drives. Due to their compactness, high torque-density and lubricant-free operation, the Magnomatics PDD® and magnetic gear are ideal candidates for ancillary drives in automotive applications. An additional advantage of the magnetic gear is a transmission compliance which can be tuned during design, such that a magnetic gear can be a clean and efficient candidate for appliances in which a hydraulic fluid coupling is currently used.
