Contactless gearing, couplings and high torque electrical drives for compressors, pumps and fans

Magnomatics’ ground breaking magnetic gear technology offers new potential for pump, compressor and motor integration through contactless gearing

Synchronous magnetic couplings are commonly used in electrically driven pumps to transmit torque through a seal wall in order to isolate the electrical motor from working fluids preventing contamination of the fluid and/or fluid ingress into the electrical motor. The coupling can also disengage on over-torques or load seizures. However, in order to match prime-mover speed to an impeller, a mechanical gear stage or belt drive may still be required.

Magnomatics technologies take the magnetic coupling concept to another level by introducing speed and torque gearing directly within the magnetic coupling element. A magnetic gear has distinct advantages for a number of pumping and compressor applications for the chemical, pharmaceutical, food, nuclear and oil and gas industries and other harsh environment applications.

  • Reduced servicing requirements and improved reliability, due to absence of lubricants
  • Physical isolation between input and output shafts, which may be required to guarantee chemical separation between the input and output shafts, without the need for dynamic seals
  • Precise peak force transmission capability and inherent overload protection allowing downrating of the rest of the transmission

A motor and magnetic gear have been combined in Magnomatics revolutionary pseudo direct drive, PDD® technology producing a compact, high torque motor for applications such as fan drives, flow control valve actuators, high torque pumps and compressors.
