Contactless high force density linear magnetic gears with inherent overload protection

Unlike conventional mechanical systems the flexibility of the low ratio magnetic gear allows a linear variant to be realised with very high force density.

As with all our magnetic gear technologies the linear variant is fully reversible and can be used as a stroke or force amplifier to suit the target application which may be as diverse as flow control valves, telescopic robotic arms and direct drive wave power generation systems.

This magnetic gear topology is well suited to actuation systems which often rely on very inefficient rotary to linear conversion technologies such as ball or lead screws and is attracting increased interest as a direct replacement to many hydraulic actuation systems. It can also be integrated with a brushless permanent magnet linear machine to provide an ultra high force density linear pseudo direct drive.
