Magnomatics provides design, analysis and manufacturing services for all classes of short-stroke electromechanical actuators and long-stroke linear motors and generators.

Short-Stroke Linear Actuators

We have expertise in all classes of linear actuator with forces ranging from milli-Newtons up to kilo-Newtons and strokes from micrometres up to a few centimetres, such as:

  • Moving-magnet actuators
  • Moving-coil (voice-coil) actuators
  • Moving iron (solenoids, variable reluctance) actuators
  • Permanent magnet polarised, moving-iron actuators

For many applications, a bespoke design of actuator is often required to fit limited space envelopes, challenging dynamic performance requirements, and harsh environmental conditions. Magnomatics has state-of-the-art 2D and 3D electromagnetic modelling software and thermal analysis tools to design and analyse innovative actuators to meet exacting specifications.

Applications include:

  • Reciprocating compressors and pumps
  • Fluid control valves
  • Automotive valves and latches

Linear Motors and Generators

Direct-drive long stroke linear electric motors that replace pneumatic and hydraulic rams remove the potential for fluid leakage and continuously running pumps. Linear electric motors are also faster acting than rotary motor driven lead-screws and ball-screws, without the associated issues of backlash, jamming or lubrication. Near silent operation with high acceleration rates and precise position/velocity control can be realised.

Strokes ranging from centimetres up to several metres and forces up to 100s of kilo-Newtons can be achieved. Magnomatics is able to offer a number of linear motor topologies to fulfil various performance, cost and environmental considerations.

  • Linear Permanent Magnet Machines (AC/DC)
  • Linear reluctance machines
  • Linear PM flux-switching machines

A linear machine can also be employed as a generator, allowing direct energy recovery of linear motion e.g. using free-piston energy converters and expanders that remove the requirement for linear-to-rotary converters, in turn improving efficiency and robustness.

Applications of linear machines include:

  • Long stroke positive displacement pumps
  • Linear alternators/generators for free-piston systems
  • Wave energy conversion
  • Pick and place systems
  • Direct-drive of automotive and aerospace loads
