Tom Wright, Junior Mechanical Design Engineer at Magnomatics, recently celebrated his one-year anniversary with the team. To mark this milestone, we asked him a few questions about his role, what he’s learned, and his life outside of work.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

What I enjoy most is the variation in projects. My work can range from improving automated manufacturing processes to contributing to cutting-edge aerospace projects. That keeps things exciting and means there’s always something new to get involved with.

What has been the most rewarding or memorable moment since joining Magnomatics?

One standout moment was seeing a machine being shipped to a customer after I had spent a year working on it. Watching the project progress from early-stage development to completion was hugely rewarding.

What skills or knowledge have you gained at Magnomatics that you’re most proud of?

I’m particularly proud of learning how to operate and programme our own precision placement winding machine. Mastering this technology has been both a challenge and an achievement, and it has given me valuable hands-on experience.

Can you tell us a little about your background and what you were doing before you joined the company?

Before joining Magnomatics, I was completing an integrated Masters in Mechanical Engineering at the The University of Sheffield. Alongside my studies, I spent my summers working as a Beach Lifeguard for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

What do you enjoy doing outside of work – any hobbies or interests?

Outside of work I stay active by regularly going climbing and hiking in the Peak District with friends. I also enjoy swimming, and I’m part of the City of Sheffield Swim Squad (COSSS) Masters.

What are you looking forward to in the next stage of your career?

I’m looking forward to seeing what innovative technologies we can develop as a company, as well as the chance to work more closely with colleagues and customers.

Has anyone in particular supported or inspired you at work?

Yes! David Powell and Sarah Duggan have been excellent role models. They’ve provided me with consistent support, guidance, and encouragement.

With Tom’s enthusiasm for new challenges and appreciation for teamwork, we are eager to see what the next stage of his journey at Magnomatics will bring.
