Nurturing tomorrow’s talent is crucial for Magnomatics, which is why we have been offering industrial placements to students at the The University of Sheffield for many years. Omar Melzi, a Master’s in Engineering student specialising in aerospace, started his placement in September 2024. He shares his thoughts on his time at Magnomatics.
What interested you in completing your placement at Magnomatics?
I initially heard about Magnomatics during one of the career fairs at Sheffield University. After speaking to several companies at the event, the Magnomatics team really stood out as being passionate about the industry and the work they do.
Incidentally, a close friend of mine got to work on projects in collaboration with various companies, including Magnomatics, as part of his electrical engineering programme. He told me more about the company and the people who work here. This, combined with my own research, convinced me that it would be a great place to complete my placement.
What kinds of projects have you been working on?
I have had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, including internal and customer initiatives.
A highlight has been working on an aero-engine starter – it was very interesting and fun to work on, but also very fast paced. I’ve also had the opportunity to run some aerospace motor simulations.
While my participation in some projects, as you would expect, has been limited, it is exciting to see plans come to life and to know I played a small part.
What have you learnt during your time at Magnomatics?
I have been exposed to so many aspects of the business and have had the opportunity to work with many experts.
One of the key skills I’ve picked up is using new software. I’ve also improved my time management skills. At university, you can work on projects at any time, day or night. In the real world, ideally you have to be as efficient as possible during working hours.
What stands out about your time at Magnomatics?
Before I started my placement, I didn’t realise how much the working environment can impact a person or the quality of their work. I previously had a part-time job in a completely unrelated field. The hours were long, and it was very stressful as the managers were always on edge. Working in a supportive and relaxed environment makes such a difference!
Another thing that stands out about Magnomatics is their hands-on approach – the team carry out the vast majority of work, especially technical work, in house. I’ve been hearing from my friends on other placements that many large companies outsource technical aspects of the job, meaning they’ve been dealing more with manufacturers and people than actively working on projects.
Would you recommend a placement at Magnomatics to other students?
Absolutely! In fact, I’ve actively been doing that. People often ask about my placement experience – how I got it and whether I enjoy it. I’m always happy to share my experience, telling other students to go for it, as not only is Magnomatics a local company, but the people are supportive and helpful. Additionally, you get to apply what you have studied while gaining new skills and experience.
What are your goals for the future?
When I applied for the placement, I said that my goal was working in the space industry, perhaps at a sonic or rocket company. However, my time at Magnomatics has broadened my horizons. I think it would be a great place to work after graduation to further develop my skills.
